How to Prevent Drain Clogs in Your Dishwasher

A dishwasher is an important appliance in any busy household or place of work, and if when they break down and cease to work, it can cause real headaches if you don’t know what the problem is. United Appliance Inc. sends out repair technicians to repair dishwashers in Los Angeles and the surrounding area frequently but we often find that the visit could have been avoided. Sometimes, the problem is as minor as something like a drain clog and this certainly doesn’t require our dishwasher repair Los Angeles service.

Clogged Drains

Cogged dishwashers create many problems such as backups of water, reduce the efficiency of your dishwasher or even clog the drainage line from your dishwasher to your kitchen sink. This can be prevented though, if you diligently care for your dishwasher by taking certain steps to make sure it stays in tip-top condition. Here are some tips to help you prevent clogged drains.

Pre-rinse your Dishes

The easiest way that you can prevent clogged drains is to pre-rinse everything before you place it into your dishwasher. You may think this is a waste of time and unnecessary but it can make a huge difference because placing dishes that have large amounts of leftover food and debris still clinging to them will only serve to clog the dishwasher drain. Smaller particles of food will disintegrate due to the water and heat but the larger particles won’t and this will cause you headaches later if the line from your sink to the dishwasher becomes clogged.

Clogs can even go deeper still. You may find after much tinkering, that the clog has actually gone as deep as the main sewage line and this is when things can get really messy, or expensive because you will either have to get your own hands dirty or call out a technician.

Just by rinsing plates beforehand, you can save yourself a lot of time and money.

Avoid Putting Small Items into the Dishwasher

When filling your dishwasher, avoid putting anything small enough to slip through the rack into the dishwasher. Things like bottle caps, small cups and children’s utensils should be washed by hand because if one of these items were to slip through the rack and end up lodging in the drain or the mini-disposal, you could have problems. Those problems could lead to more repair expenses.

If you treat your dishwasher with care, you will find that clogs seldom occur and you won’t need to call for repairs very often at all, if at all. Follow the guidelines set out here and you won’t have to worry about clogs ruining the harmony of your household or place of work.

How to Properly Clean Stove Drip Pans

At United Appliance Inc. we receive a lot of requests for stove repairs in Los Angeles and we are happy to provide our stove repair Los Angeles service, however, we are sometimes shocked at the poor level of maintenance most stoves receive. Although stove drip pans are not an essential part of your oven, they still have a job to do as well as increase the overall look of your oven.

The problem with stove drip pans is that stove owners often leave them for too long before cleaning them, so that by the time they do, the pans are clogged up with grease and oil as well as food debris. The best way to keep your drip pans looking like the rest of the oven is to clean them frequently.

Often Overlooked

When it comes to cleaning, stove drip pans are often left out. The logic of most stove owners is that because the drip pans aren’t an essential part of the stove, why should they clean them? For one thing, they help to give your oven that ‘just bought’ look that impresses visitors to your home. For another, dirty drip pans spread germs and bacteria as well as cause an unpleasant odor that lingers in your kitchen. Your drip pans, although not important in a mechanical sense, add to the aesthetic beauty of your kitchen and why wouldn’t you want your kitchen to look nice?

Step One of the Cleaning Process

The first thing you should do when cleaning your drip pans is to remove them from your stove which can be a tricky process, depending on the model of your stove. The removal process for some stoves involves lifting the burners off and removing the pans underneath them. With some of the older stoves the process is simply a matter of sliding out the long pans which slot under the burners, 2 burners per pan. These longer pans can be a pain though when it comes to cleaning.

Step Two – The Cleaning

Once removed, take the pans and place them in a sink half full with warm water. Once that is done pour 2-3 caps of bleach into the sink and leave the pans to soak in the solution for around 30 minutes, in order to soften the built up grease and dirt on the pans.

After 30 minutes, drain the sink and inspect the pans. In most cases, bleach and warm water should be enough to dissolve the built up grime and dirt, and so once you have drained the sink you merely need to wipe the pans and the grime will easily be removed. This isn’t always the case, however, and this means you need to apply a wire brush or steel wool in order to scrub the remaining grime from the pans.

Once that is done replace the pans and burners and you should notice that your oven looks much better than before, perhaps newer because the pans should be shiny and clean!

Don’t Leave it Till it’s Too Late

If you leave your drip pans for too long, the chances are you won’t be able return them to their previous glory and instead will be faced with ugly drip pans forever more! Try to clean your drip pans as often as possible because the build up of grime on them can cause the pans to become warped and unsightly.

If you find your stove is suffering from more than just dirty drip pans, call (310) 775-8075 and we will provide our best stove repair Los Angeles service.

How you Could Save yourself the Cost of Calling out a Repairman for your Refrigerator

Before you call out a repairman from United Appliance Inc. there are a few things you can do to ensure you aren’t just wasting time and money on a small issue. It is essential that you learn the inner-workings of your refrigerator so that you can save costs in the long run as well as properly maintain your refrigerator to give it a longer lifespan.

So before you pick up that phone to request our refrigerator repair, Los Angeles service, here is what you should do if you find that your refrigerator is playing up:

Is Your Refrigerator too Noisy?

If your refrigerator is excessively noisy it usually means that one of the fan motors inside the machine is faulty or overworked and needs replacing. Luckily fans are easily replaced.

If it isn’t the fans making all the noise, then it may unfortunately be the compressor which is bad news because this means you may need a new refrigerator.

Is your Refrigerator Leaking?

All refrigerators have drip trays on the underside and on occasion, these drip trays can break and a small hole may appear which causes water to leak out onto your floor. There may also be a blocked drain which you need to locate and unclog. This is a fairly easy process though.

Has your Refrigerator stopped Cooling?

This can be caused by a number of things.

  1. A knocked dial – Somebody may have accidentally knocked the dial onto the highest setting, making the refrigerator much warmer than usual.
  2. Broken door seals – In time, all door seals become worn and may break in places. This means that the seals which previously kept cool air in are now allowing cool air out and warm air in causing your refrigerator to cool unevenly.
  3. Broken fan or clogged coils – Check the fan on the bottom of your refrigerator to see if it is still running or not, it may need replacing. If the fan is running okay, then the coils on the bottom may be clogged with dust and debris. Simply clear the dust off the coils and this should improve the efficiency of your refrigerator.

Has the Light Stopped Working?

If you find that the light isn’t turning on when you open your refrigerator door, it could be that the outlet is not working properly. A fuse could have blown, knocking out the outlets in that section of your kitchen and if your fridge was the cause of the blown fuse, your refrigerator could be the only appliance affected. This happens more than you might think. If the outlet is fine, it is probably time to replace the light bulb.

Maintain your Refrigerator Yourself

United Appliance Repair Inc. is always available to provide our excellent service for your appliance repairs however; we also like to encourage our customers to take care of their appliances to ensure they remain in peak condition. Periodically, perform a maintenance check on your refrigerator just to make sure everything looks like it is working normally, this may safe you any nasty surprises in future.

Quite often our customers call out one of our technicians for repairs, only to be shocked to find out that their appliance isn’t faulty at all but simply needs cleaning or maintaining. Check first, and then double check because you could save yourself a lot of money and time by doing so.

United Appliance Repair Inc. Oven Repair Advice

Your oven is without a doubt one of ‘the’ most important appliances in your household, right? As without it, how would you cook those family meals that almost always require a stove and an ‘oven?’

Ovens are an essential part of any household but just like any appliance, they sometimes experience problems both minor and major. In this blog post, we hope to help you understand those minor problems a little better so you feel a little more confident when problems occur with your oven.

However, unless the problem is obvious and you are 100% sure you can deal with it yourself, we advise you to call us and seek the aid of one of our experienced repair technicians because ovens, electric or gas, can be dangerous.

Ovens malfunction in various ways but the two main areas are

  • Electrical
  • Mechanical

Electrical Issues with Your Oven

Nowadays, most ovens are powered by electricity and when your oven is getting any power at all or simply isn’t turning on, it could be that a circuit has tripped at your panel box.

Make sure to check this before calling us. If, however, your oven ‘does’ turn on but just doesn’t produce any heat at all, then it is more than likely a defective selector switch or a faulty thermostat.

If your oven seems to be cooking food at too high or too low a temperature, this too, is a thermostat issue.

It is even possible for gas ovens to suffer from electrical problems because the pilot light requires electricity to function. There may even be a problem with the clock or thermostat as a result of an electrical fault.

Always keep an eye on these things to ensure you don’t get a nasty surprise when your oven stops working.

If in doubt, call our oven repair Los Angeles service.

Knowing your Oven and the Possible Mechanical Issues

Believe it or not, oven doors play a crucial role in ensuring your oven is functioning properly. Why is this?
It is simply because, with most ovens if the door isn’t shut properly or is damaged in some way, the oven won’t cook or won’t cook as effectively as it normally does.
Check your oven door and the seal around it to make sure there is no damage or flaws around its edge.
Sometimes the problem is with the air circulation, if your food isn’t cooking properly. This could mean your oven filter is clogged up with debris and needs clearing in order to restore the balance.

Call us when in doubt.

If your oven malfunctions and you are not sure why, don’t take any chances, ovens can be very dangerous is not handled with care. Call United Appliance Repair Inc. and you can discuss the problem with one of our skilled technicians before arranging for repairs.
